Photomontage: Image Hijack (Part 2)
For this image, I wanted to focus on the political issue of immigration. This is a very controversial topic, especially in the United States. One of the most common forms of immigration comes from the Mexican border into America. It is important as it allows people living in Mexico to have a new life in the US. Other people believe immigration is a bad thing as they are taking jobs and overpopulating the country. I don't see immigration negatively, but I can understand why some people can see it that way.
I thought the perfect way to represent immigration would be to use the album cover for Abbey Road by The Beatles. This is such an iconic image and has become parodied and altered many times in the past. Out of the many different sketches I created, I thought I would mix ideas from a few different ones to create this photo.
To create this image, I masked out George Harrison and Paul McCartney in the back so I can take them off Abbey Road and into Mexico. I included the wall that Trump built during his time as president to keep immigrants out of the country. I added an old and weathered sign that reads "No Immigrants" to further represent the message of the image. On the Mexican side of the image, I added a Mexican flag painted on the wall. I also added a shadow of a wired fence, further representing the restraints against the immigrants. I also added a filter on that side to create more contrast in separating the two. On the American side of the image, I added the American flag along with a border patrol officer in the background.
I think this image can be placed in a few different locations. It can be shown in an art show that goes over political issues in America. I can also see this being a mural on a wall in a big city area near the border. It is something that a lot of people would be able to look at and understand. It would connect with a lot of them and have some impact on the subject matter. The image represents some of the hardships and obstacles that get in the way of immigration. Even with these obstacles, people are still finding ways to get into the country.
