M4 CP - Book Cover Design (Part 2)
I found this project very enjoyable for me to create as it covered a subject I was very passionate about. I knew I wanted to add a fantasy aspect to my book cover and create something that can really catch the viewer’s eyes. I wanted to include some of the main characters from the book in an organized and dynamic way. I found the proximity principle of Gestalt Principles of Design would be very useful in my design. The placement of the characters is one of the most important parts of this cover, so it was essential to get that right. The principle proved to be very useful in creating an effective design.
When creating the piece, it required a lot of time to try and find the right images to go along with my sketch. This was especially challenging when it came to the character Kiza. She is the Sith in the center of the image separating Luke Skywalker and Lando Calrissian. The problem I came across is she is a character created for this book, so there is no live-action representation of her. This brought the challenge of trying to make this character come to life based on the original cover and reference image inside the book. This forced me to create this character from scratch using various elements. Another challenge was adjusting the lighting and highlights of all the characters. I wanted to make sure they all looked similar and fit in with the surrounding area. This meant I needed to take the glow from the planet and lightsaber into consideration.
I think I was able to include all the necessary elements in my design. I ensured I included all texts, logos, and dimensions required to complete my design. I think it made for a very effective book cover and helped me advance my Photoshop skills further. I was able to incorporate new techniques and skills into my design in order to make the best possible cover.
